What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a word coined by Bill Mollison and is “ The conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is a system of assembling conceptual, material, and strategic components in a pattern, which functions to “benefit life in all its forms.” (Permaculture, A Designers manual, Bill Mollison, Tagari publications)

The Prime Directive of Permaculture

The only ethical decision is to take responsibility for our own existence and that of our children- make it now.

Ethics of Permaculture

Care of the Earth

Provision for all life systems to continue and multiply.

Reforest all areas not allocated to production

Caring of all living and non-living things ie. soils, species,
Atmosphere, forests, micro-habitats, animals, waters

Right-livelihood ie. working for useful and beneficial systems. Develop a concience about what you do to earn a living

Rule of necessitous use- Leave any natural system alone until we are, of strict necessity, forced to use it.

Rule of conservative use - When it is necessary to use a natural resourse we must insist on every attempt to:
Reduce waste, hence pollution

Thoroughly replace lost minerals

Energy auditing

Assess long-term negative bio-social affects on society and act to buffer or eliminate them..

Care of people

Provision for people to access those resources necessary to their existence.

Without a permanent sustainable agriculture there is no possibility of a stable, sustained social order.

Taking responsibility of your own food needs-rather than broad scale destructive agricultural practices.

Taking responsibility of your self and support beneficial systems. Develop a concience about what you do to earn a living.

We must evolve the mature ethic that sees all humankind as family, and all life as allied associations.

Setting Limits to population and consumption

By governing our needs, we can set resources aside to further the above principles.

After having taken care of our own needs then we extend our influence(energy) to helping others achieve that aim.
Distribute excesses whatever the form ie. money, talks, resources etc. Empowering others to do the same as you
interdependence/cooperation is the very basis of existing life systems and of future survival, whereas dependence can be generated to create domination.

Basic Life Ethic

Recognise the intrinsic worth of every living thing!!
